Welcome to Cultivating Consciousness
At Cultivating Consciousness (CC), we’re creating a space for learning, growth, connection, and transformation. Here, you’ll be encouraged to pause, reflect, and explore the world around you—your environment, food choices, travel habits, relationships, and even your late-night online shopping binges. Sustainability is not just a buzzword; it’s a lifestyle that begins with awareness.
Every choice we make, from the shirt we put on in the morning to the dinner we prepare in the evening, has unseen ripple effects. Have you ever stopped to wonder:
Where was this shirt made?
What materials went into it?
How far did it travel to reach me?
What happens to the scraps left behind?
These are questions we often overlook in the pursuit of convenience or trends—and we’re all guilty of it. But awareness is the first step to meaningful change.
Food: A Central Theme
At CC, we’ll unpack how your $5 chicken thighs from Walmart contribute to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), which harm the environment, public health, and social equity. For instance, as Wendee Nicole highlights in her piece on CAFOs in North Carolina, these operations often dump bacteria-laden waste near low-income, rural communities, causing health crises and reducing quality of life.
The consequences extend far beyond localized pollution. CAFOs fuel antibiotic resistance, animal cruelty, contaminated water supplies, and economic disparities. Through CC, we aim to educate you on how sustainable food choices—like sourcing meat from local farmers or supporting regenerative agriculture—can counteract these harms.
CC also explores food justice and food security, emphasizing their deep ties to sustainability. Alkon and Agyeman’s Cultivating Food Justice: Race, Class, and Sustainability is a cornerstone of our discussions. They highlight how systemic inequalities, fueled by decades of neoliberal policies, make it increasingly difficult for many to access basic needs like nutritious food. This can be a difficult concept to wrap one’s head around, but the systemic strings of food security and meeting basic needs in order to achieve a high quality of life are almost intrinsically entangled in the strings of sustainability and our impacts on the environment.
For example, the sweet corn you buy for a barbecue may seem innocuous but often stems from industrial monocultures. These practices deplete soil health, harm small farmers and contribute to their own food insecurity, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions—issues intertwined with food insecurity and environmental sustainability.
Beyond Food
While food is a central theme in Cultivating Consciousness, so many aspects of our lives are intertwined with the ways in which you treat and view the world and the sustainability that results from such. We will cover concepts such as sustainable supply chain management and business tactics, living sustainably on a budget - we know that not everyone can afford $10,000 solar panels, regenerative agriculture, economic theories, art and music, community and collective change, and more. Sustainable development is not confined to lowering our increasing temperatures - it is incorporated in almost every aspect of your life, whether you are aware of it or not.
A Judgement-Free Space for Growth
At Cultivating Consciousness, we recognize the weight of environmental grief. Sustainability can feel overwhelming, and fear-mongering or guilt-tripping only make it harder to engage. Instead, our goal is to educate, empower, and celebrate every step—no matter how small—toward a more conscious lifestyle.
From food systems and supply chains to sustainable living on a budget, technology, art, and community, CC will cover a wide array of topics to help you navigate your journey. Remember, no one can solve the world’s problems alone, and every effort counts.
Thank you for being here. We appreciate you, we believe in you, and we’re excited to grow alongside you.
